On new years day, my wife and I went for a blustery hike in the gorgeous Black Mountains to chat about our goals for 2018.
Cobwebs well and truly blown away, we came away with a few things in mind. Amongst others, I’ve gone with these two to keep me motivated for the year ahead:
- Race in 2 ultra marathons, including my first 100 miler
- Sign up to #run1000miles, aiming to run 1,500 miles
Run more than I’ve run before
Last year, I challenged myself to run 1,000 miles and race in my first ultra marathon. I had no idea if I could do either. So I was chuffed to complete both. And surprised I enjoyed them.
This year, I reckon I can up the ante a bit. So, two ultra marathons instead of one. And for added spice, one’s a 100 miler (ouch). I’ve also signed up to the #run1000miles challenge again. It worked well for me last year. I ended up running 1,250 miles. Seems only fair I try and nudge my mileage up a bit and reach 1,500.
Yep, it’s not all about the running. I’ve also plumped for three other (non-running) goals:
- Regular weekend hikes with my wife
- Nurture my inner monk and (try to) practice mindfulness every day
- Reduce my use of single use plastic
Wales might be small, but it’s pretty epic. So my wife and I agreed we want to get out and explore more often. And hopefully we’ll discover a cracking pub or two along the way.
Mindfulness? Well, no matter how much I run, my mind just doesn’t know how to switch off. I’ve meditated on and off for years but I want to try and make it a regular habit. Even a minute a day will count.
Of all my goals for 2018, I reckon reducing single use plastic will be the toughest. It’s everywhere, on everything, and it’s choking our rivers and seas. Yes, it’s a pretty small contribution, but I want to give it my best shot.
So, there they are. My goals for 2018. Running, hiking, an attempt at inner peace and one for the planet. Should keep me busy.
